PROGRAMS OF STUDY

It is the goal of all programs of study at Chicago Baptist Institute to develop students to the fullest of their God-given potential and to prepare them for living lives of Christian Stewardship and service, which are responsible to God and responsive to the needs of people.

To this end, not only the curriculum, but also the efforts of the administration, the faculty, and the total resources of the Institute are directed.

NON-DEGREE PROGRAM

The non-degree program is designed for those persons who desire training at the Institute for Christian instruction and service, but either desire a shorter program of study or do not meet the academic qualifications for degree programs.

Application for this program is made in the same manner as the degree programs. Students applying for this program must specify that they are requesting admission to the certificate program. Scholarships and Financial Aid are NOT available for this program.

Certificate program students, upon completion of the prescribed course of study, receive the respective certificate and are permitted to march in the commencement exercises with the other graduates. Should the student obtain the necessary academic qualifications and desires to be admitted into the degree program, all course work for which a letter grade of “C” or above was earned will be applied to that program.

The Certificate Program is a thirty (30) hour course of study offering four (4) areas of concentration: Bible; Missions; Church Ministries (Sunday School Teachers/Superintendents and Deacons/Trustees); and Advanced Studies (Graduate Studies Concentration).

The Advanced Studies Program consists of thirty (30) hours of academic study. It provides a solid biblical foundation for the graduate of any accredited college, university, or professional school. Completing the ASP satisfies the Bible and theology requirements for acceptance by many mission agencies and other graduate programs. Each course earns graduate-level credit and may be applied toward a Master’s Degree in Ministry, Divinity, Theology, and Biblical Studies.

DEGREE PROGRAMS

Associate of Arts (A.A.)

The Associate of Arts degree is offered to persons who desire, for various personal reasons, a two-year program of study. The majors offered are: Theology, Biblical studies, and Christian Education. This program of study includes 60 total hours of General Studies, Bible/Theology, and Church Vocations Concentration

Bachelor Degrees

The Bachelor Degree program normally takes a full-time student four years to complete, but there is no upper limit on the time to complete the program. In order to graduate from this program, the student must complete all specified course work and satisfy all general education proficiencies. In addition, students must complete the minimum of six semesters of Christian Service and all other graduation requirements (see Graduation Requirements). The degree can be awarded when the combined total of required major courses, seminars, and transferred credits is 123 hours. (153 hours for the B.Th. Degree).

Bachelor of Theology

The Bachelor of Theology degree is awarded for five years of biblical, theological, general and professional studies. The purpose of this program is to enable the students to perform the professional Christian ministries of Missions, Christian Education, Clergy or the Pastorate. The Bachelor of Theology Degree program is terminal. It requires at least 30 hours of course work beyond that required for other Bachelor degrees.

Bachelor of Biblical Studies Degree

The Bachelor of Biblical Studies Degree is awarded for four years of academic work. It provides the necessary education for students to equip them to carry out effective ministry in the church and parachurch organizations, graduate studies in Bible and related disciplines, and life-long learning. The Bachelor of Biblical Studies Degree program is terminal

Bachelor of Christian Education Degree

The Bachelor of Christian Education Degree is awarded for four years of academic work. It must be taken with a general program of studies in Bible, Christian Education, and liberal arts courses. The purpose of the general program is to enable a student to become a para-professional Christian worker or to pursue professional education at the graduate level. The Bachelor of Christian Education Degree program is terminal.

OT101 OLD TESTAMENT SURVEY I – 3 credit hours
A study of the history, literature, geography and theo-philosophical concepts presented in the Old Testament. It will cover the period of the beginnings through the fall of the Northern Kingdom.

OT102 OLD TESTAMENT SURVEY II – 3 credit hours
Continuing the study of the Old Testament with a critical interpretation analysis of the Southern Kingdom with emphasis on the exilic and post-exilic periods.

OT201 OLD TESTAMENT THEOLOGY I – 3 credit hours
A study of the Old Testament views of God, man, history, sin, and salvation with emphasis on the nature of God’s relationship with His universe. Prerequisites OT101, OT102

OT202 OLD TESTAMENT THEOLOGY II – 3 credit hours
Continued study of the theology of the Old Testament with consideration being given to the problems of constructing and Old Testament theology with a review of recent attempts. Prerequisite OT201
 
BH215 BIBLICAL HERMENEUTICS – 3 credit hours
An introduction to the basic principles of hermeneutics aimed at providing the student with necessary tools for a working knowledge of Biblical exegesis.

OT 235 INTERPRETING THE PROPHETS – 3 credit hours
A survey of the lives and messages of the major and minor prophets, focusing on their spiritual, historical background, theological content and present homiletical significance.

NT101 NEW TESTAMENT SURVEY I – 3 credit hours (The Gospel and Acts)
A study of the history, literature, and theology of the New Testament. Attention will be given to the mission and message of Jesus, the formation of the gospel tradition, and the development and growth of the early church.

NT102 NEW TESTAMENT SURVEY II – 3 credit hours
(The Epistles and Revelation)  A survey of the background and content of the Pauline Epistles, the general Epistles, and Revelation. Attention will be given to the Jewish and Hellenistic background of the early church and the development of the canon.

NT250 NEW TESTAMENT THEOLOGY I – 3 credit hours
A study of the early church’s understanding of the mission and message of Jesus and the character of the Christian proclamation. Prerequisites: NT101, NT102

NT251 NEW TESTAMENT THEOLOGY II – 3 credit hours
A systematic study of New Testament progressive revelation by a methodology sensitive to the factors of history and culture. Prerequisite NT250

NT220 THE SYNOPTIC GOSPELS – 3 credit hours
This course focuses on the context, content, development and writings of the Synoptic Gospels. The harmony of the significant events and teachings of Jesus’ ministry will be explored.

NT306 GENERAL EPISTLES – 3 credit hours
A survey of Hebrews, James, and the Epistles of Peter, John, and Jude; in light of their backgrounds, life situations, and literary forms with attention given to their relevance for contemporary Christian living.

NT401 THE BOOK OF ACTS - 3 credit hours 
A verse by verse study of the text of Acts. Discussion and analysis of the author’s message with the purpose of applying the principles of the New Testament church to the 21st Century.

TH211 INTRODUCTION TO SYSTEMATIC THEOLOGY I – 3 credit hours
A study of the meaning and methods of systematic theology. Emphasis will be placed on Christian understanding of God, Trinity, and Creation. Prerequisites: OT101, OT102; NT101, NT102

TH212 INTRODUCTION TO SYSTEMATIC THEOLOGY II – 3 credit hours
A systematic study of the principal theological doctrines of the Christian faith. Emphasis will be placed on the doctrines of salvation, church, the ordinances, and eschatology. Prerequisite: TH211

TH114 BAPTIST DOCTRINE – 3 credit hours
Analysis in interpretation and critical appraisal of the benefits commonly held among Baptist.

TH327 CHRISTIAN APOLOGETICS – 3 credit hours 
The examination of some forms of contemporary unbelief and some Christian response to it.

TH422 PHILOSOPHY OF RELIGION – 3 credit hours
An examination of the reasonableness of belief in God, the occurrence of evil, the possibility of miracles, the nature of religious language, and relation of faith to reason.
PH101 BASIC CHRISTIAN ETHICS – 3 credit hours
An examination of the ethical teachings of the Bible in light of contemporary ethical standards, methods, and normal decision-making.

TH210 THE CHURCH AND ITS DOCTRINES – 3 credit hours
A foundation course, using primarily a Bible Doctrine approach that surveys basic doctrines of the church and their implications for life. Specifically, the course will survey Bibliography, Theology Proper, Anthropology, Angelology, Christology, Soteriology, Pneumatology, Ecclesiology, and Eschatology. Special attention will be paid to key terms, concepts, and biblical texts. The course also will introduce the various branches of theology.

NT244 INTERPRETING REVELATION – 3 credit hours
An examination of the book of Revelation, seeking a sound and accurate interpretation of its message. A study of the nature of apocalyptic literature methodology of interpretation, and the book’s historical background will precede the exposition and discussion of the biblical text.

TH300 HISTORICAL THEOLOGY I – 3 credit hours
A survey and critical appraisal of the history of the development of Christian theology from the 18th century. The course will emphasize major thinkers and the development of various traditions and theological methods. Controversies, heresies, creeds, and confessions will also be considered. Prerequisites: GC 222; PH112

TH310 HISTORICAL THEOLOGY II – 3 credit hours
A survey and critical appraisal of the history of the development of Christian theology from the 18th century to the present. The course will emphasize some of the more influential current theological trends. Prerequisites: TH300

TH450 APOLOGETICS – 3 credit hours
Contrasts the biblical concept of apologetics with various alternative positions, both theistic and non-theistic. Considers major problem areas such as authority, miracles, evil and evolution. Sets forth a basis for a Christian apologetic that is theologically and historically sound.

OT301 PENTATEUCH – 3 credit hours
A survey of the material in the first five books of the Old Testament. The structure and content of each book will be analyzed. Specialized attention is given to the problems of early Israelite history, the development of Hebrew Law, and the literary types of the Pentateuch.

OT302 OLD TESTATMENT THEOLOGY – 3 credit hours
A study of the Old Testament views of God, man, history, sin, and salvation. Consideration will be given to the problems of constructing an Old Testament theology with a review of recent attempts.

OT303 MINOR PROHPETS – 3 credit hours
An expository study of the twelve minor prophets with emphasis on their spiritual message, historical background, theological content and present homiletical significance.

OT304 PSALMS AND WISDOM LITERATURE – 3 credit hours
A study of the origin and liturgical use of selected Psalms with attention to their form and content. Their importance as a reflection of Israel’s worship life, and their poetic and religious value for our generation will be emphasized. A survey of the major motifs in Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Job, with special attention to an analysis of the book of Job will be included.

NT201 THE LIFE AND TEACHINGS OF CHRIST – 3 credit hours
An exegetical study of the person of Christ as depicted in the gospels, making use of the methods of both grammatical and historical exegesis. Attention is given to background study, the interpretation of the teachings and acts of Jesus and the application of these truths in a modern society.

NT301 ROMANS – 3 credit hours
An exegetical course on Paul’s systematic argument as to the sinfulness of human beings, the righteousness of God, and the justification by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. Practical application of the doctrinal teaching will be stressed.

OT404 EZEKIEL AND DANIEL – 3 credit hours
An interpretation of these historical, prophetic, and apocalyptic books based on the English text, with special attention given to post-exilic Israelite history and religion and the rise of the apocalyptic movement in Judaism.

OT406 ISAIAH – 3 credit hours
An exegetical study of the prophecies of Isaiah in their historical context. Special attention will be devoted to the Messianic portions of the book. Explanation will be offered to acquaint the student with the critical problems affecting Isaiah.

OT408 JEREMIAH – 3 credit hours
A systematic study of Jeremiah’s life and prophecies against the political, social, and religious background of the end of the seventh and the beginning of the sixth century B.C. in Israel. Similarities to the personality and character of the Messiah will be noted.

BL202 INTRODUCTION TO BIBLICAL LANGUAGES – 3 credit hours
This course is designed to help the student use the basic Hebrew and Greek tools in preaching, teaching and studying. This will require a working knowledge of the alphabets, an understanding of basic grammatical terms and functions, procedures for doing word and comparative studies, and acquaintance with the ability to utilize the standard reference tools available.

BL321-322 ELEMENTARY BIBLICAL HEBREW – 3 credit hours
Introduction to the elements of Biblical Hebrew: pronunciation and grammar, fundamentals of syntax, and acquisition of a basic vocabulary. Pre-requisite: BL 202. (3-3) Offered on demand.

PM244 DOCTRINAL PREACHING – 3 credit hours
Application of the knowledge of Christian doctrine, together with exegetical and homiletical principles. Focus will be on Scriptural truths on which the Christian faith is grounded: “The Mystery of the Incarnation,” – “The Historicity of God,” “The Message of the Cross,” “The Miracle of the Resurrection,” and “The meaning of the Ascension.” The content and delivery of sermons by each student will be analyzed and evaluated by various techniques.
	
BI212 GENESIS – 3 credit hours
Besides presenting an interpretation of the book and examining specific exegetical problems, the course introduces the student to the issues of the Bible and science; historical, cultural, and archaeological backgrounds; and theological development of the book. Emphasis is on the book’s purpose and message. 
 
BI316 MAJOR PROPHETS I – 3 credit hours
Examines the Book of Isaiah, giving attention to historical background and the critical issues surrounding the book while focusing primarily on detailed analysis of the content. Emphasis is on the theological significance of the purpose and message of the book for both Old and New Testaments.

BI417 MAJOR PROPHETS II – 3 credit hours
Examines the books of Jeremiah, Lamentations, and Ezekiel, giving attention to the historical background period surrounding the fall of Jerusalem but focusing primarily on a systematic  interpretation of the text. Emphasis is given to the type of oracles that are used and the resulting message and theology that emerges.

BI325 PAULINE EPISTLES I – 3 credit hours
A study of I and II Corinthians, with attention given to the background, church problems, doctrine, and practical applications of these books.

BI427 PAULINE EPISTLES II – 3 credit hours
A study of the epistles of Christian liberty (Galatians) and the four epistles that emphasize church truth (Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, Philemon). Includes the doctrine of justification by faith, the Spirit-filled life, the person and work of Christ, and the exalted position of the church.
 
BI432 PAULINE EPISTLES III – 3 credit hours
Considers the historical setting of I and II Thessalonians and ascertains principles of the Christian life from the perspective of the second coming of Christ. Also examines I and II Timothy and Titus, giving special attention to the Pauline authorship and the appropriateness of their teachings for the church and its ministry in our day.

Divisional Objectives

1.	To train the student in theory and practice in the area of church vocations.
2.	To prepare the student to give effective leadership in specific areas of ministry.
3.	To introduce the student to various tools for conducting Christian ministries.
4.	To equip the student with business and management skills

Through this division, the students will be prepared to serve effectively as pastors of church congregations, preachers, evangelists, missionaries, Christian educators, church youth workers, music leaders, and other church and church/community denomination ministry areas.

PS112 BASIC CHURCH ADMINISTRATION - 3 credit hours
This course explores the concept of the ministry and its duties. The organization and program of the local church receives attention in its relationship to the community, the denomination, and the world mission.
CM114 INTRODUCTION TO WORSHIP AND CHURCH MUSIC - 3 credit hours 
This course studies the history, theology, and practice of worship in the church, emphasizing the ecclesiological dynamics of the evangelism tradition. An evaluation of church music for use in the church is made.

PS201 THE CHURCH, THE LAW, THE PASTOR - 3 credit hours
A survey of the laws that govern and impact the church and the pastor.

PS231 CHRISTIAN STEWARDSHIP - 3 credit hours
This course seeks to examine God’s requirements of His people of that which He has entrusted to them as well as the principles of the effective fiscal management of the church.

PS110 INTRODUCTION TO PASTORAL CARE AND COUNSELING - 3 credit hours 
An exploration of the whole concept of ministry and the duties of pastors with emphasis on pastoral services, especially counseling.

PS282 CLINICAL PASTORAL TRAINING IN THE GENERAL HOSPITAL - 3 credit hours
This course will provide an opportunity to apply some of the principles learned in the classroom to the hospital setting (under supervision).

PS300 SUPERVISED PASTORAL MINISTRY - 3 credit hours
A supervised experience, designed to emphasize the transition of principles into the church setting.

PS111 PREPARATION AND DELIVERY OF SERMON I - 3 credit hours 
The nature of preaching, preaching in the context of today’s world, the techniques, of sermon building, the use of the Bible in preaching, and the preparation of the manuscript are treated in this course. Sermons are prepared and presented utilizing various types and structure.

PS112 PREPARATION AND DELIVERY OF A SERMON II - 3 credit hours
This course examines examples of preaching in and from the Bible, provides an opportunity to reflect in the essential relationship between hermeneutics, and provides a supervised laboratory experience in which student-preachers prepare and present Biblical sermons. Prerequisite PS111

PS243 PREACHING TO HUMAN NEEDS - 3 credit hours
This course seeks to develop those preaching skills which enable the preacher to speak directly to a Christian in the practice of his faith.

PS244 DOCTRINAL PREACHING - 3 credit hours 
This course examines the preparation of sermons which are based on Scriptural Doctrine: God, Christ, the Holy Spirit, the church, love, faith, etc.

PS 304 HISTORY OF PREACHING - 3 credit hours
A survey of outstanding Christian preachers. Attention will be focused on the preacher’s biography, strengths and weaknesses in his preaching style and method, and content of selected sermons.

PS307 PASTORAL MINISTRY - 3 credit hours
Investigation of the role and function of the minister. Attention will be given to the pastor’s understanding of himself and his call, his relation to the church and the community, the various ministerial tasks to be performed and their interrelationship, and the resources available to the pastor. Lectures will be tailored to the concrete needs of the working minister.

PS308 PREACHING RESOURCES - 3 credit hours 
Sharing of meaningful and practical sermon material, outlines, and illustrations. Lectures incorporating analysis and evaluation, research, and application of shared materials are designed to improve the student’s preaching ministry.

MS111 INTRODUCTION TO MISSIONS - 3 credit hours
This course seeks to introduce the students to basic concepts operational in missions from both historical and contemporary perspectives. Theology, history, trends, problems, and the student’s own call and part in missions are considered, particularly in the light of the book of Acts.

MS112 MISSIONS: HOME/WORLD - 3 credit hours
A study of the church fulfilling its missionary function in the world. Particular attention is given to the nature of the church of Jesus Christ and its Biblical basis for missions, beginning at home and continuing throughout the world.

EV111 INTRODUCTION TO EVANGELISM - 3 credit hours 
A study of the theory and practice of the church’s evangelical witness. The Biblical basis and theological understanding of evangelism will be examined, showing it to be the central thrust in the life and work of the church and the Christian. A rationale for evangelism and methods of witnessing will be studied.

SO412 THE CULTURAL SETTING OF MINISTRY - 3 credit hours
A survey of the sociological, psychological, and community factors which affect the church’s ministry and society.

MI401 HISTORY OF MISSIONS - 3 credit hours
A history of the spread of Christianity and a review of contemporary mission programs and methods. Attention will be given to the study of the Black experience in American history, tracing their common experiences relative to the work of missions.

CE101 HISTORY AND PHILOSOPHY OF CHRISTIAN EDUCATION - 3 credit hours 
This course surveys the history of Christian education as well as various philosophical view points of Christian education.

CE102 ORGANIZATION AND ADMINISTRATION OF CHRISTIAN EDUCATION - 3 credit hours
This course will examine topics relating to managing the church’s educational program: evaluation, financial planning, leadership development, management theory, planning organization models, and professional growth.

CE103 EFFECTIVE BIBLE STUDY - 3 credit hours
This course identifies methods and approaches to Bible study that can lead to spiritual growth and Christian maturity. Areas that will be covered include the structure of the Bible, resources for personal study, and other subjects that will add meaning to the reading of the Bible.

CE104 INTRODUCTION TO SPIRITUAL FORMATION - 3 credit hours 
This course explores those principles and techniques necessary for the development of a vital, spiritual personality.

CE111 EDUCATIONAL MINISTRY WITH CHILDREN - 3 credit hours
In this course, a study will be made of the characteristics of children and ways of ministering to them. Topics will include the social context of the home, school, and television as well as the child’s understanding of theological concepts. Special models for working with children will be explored.
CE112 EDUCATIONAL MINISTRY WITH YOUTH - 3 credit hours
This course aims to develop ministry skills with youth including: teaching prayer, communion, advocacy and conflict management.

CE113 EDUCATIONAL MINISTRY WITH ADULTS - 3 credit hours 
This course is a study of the developments, needs, and growth patterns of male and female adults and appropriate teaching methods.

CE200 THE WORK OF THE SUNDAY SCHOOL SUPERINTENDENT - 3 credit hours
This course focuses on the various administrative tasks needed to direct the church school ministry. Students will focus on a variety of administrative functions, such as planning, programming, budgeting, recruiting, supervising, delegating, selecting curriculum, and evaluating.

CE201 PRINCIPLES AND METHODS OF BIBLE TEACHING - 3 credit hours
This course is designed to provide the student with the basic principles of teaching as well as an examination of the methods involved in teaching the Bible.

CE202 ADMINISTRATION AND LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT - 3 credit hours 
This course seeks to examine the Biblical theology of leadership as it relates to organization, decision-making, setting and achieving goals, and supervision.

CE203 CHRISTIAN FAMILY LIFE DEVELOPMENT - 3 credit hours
This course will explore Biblical family life backgrounds, the historical perspective, and strategies for effective family living.

CE204 SUPERVISED EDUCATIONAL MINISTRY - 3 credit hours
A supervised experience designed to emphasize the transition of principles into the church setting.

CE205 CREATIVE WAYS OF TEACHING - 3 credit hours 
This course is designed to instruct in the methods of teaching in the local church setting. It will assist teachers in discovering new ways of teaching, such as learning behaviors and strategies of student learning.

CH111 INTRODUCTION TO CHURCH HISTORY I - 3 credit hours
A survey of the major issues, personalities, and developments: Patristic, Medieval, Renaissance and Christianity.

CH112 INTRODUCTIONTO CHURCH HISTORY II - 3 credit hours
A study of reformers and reformation movements in the Fourteenth, Fifteenth and Sixteenth Centuries. A study of modern Christianity and American Church History is included. Prerequisite CH111.

CH114 BAPTIST HISTORY - 3 credit hours 
A study of Baptist origins, development, principles, polity, leaders, and current trends.

CH200 WOMEN IN CHURCH HISTORY - 3 credit hours
A survey of the role and contribution of women in the history of the church.

CH251 BAPTIST POLITY AND PRACTICE – 3 credit hours
Emphasis will be placed on significant historical development, contemporary forms, and formation of the district association, the state convention, the national convention, the agencies and institutions, and local church polity.
BS/PH304 GENESIS OF BLACK MORALITY IN AMERICA – 3 credit hours
An examination of the forming of black morals and values from the institution of slavery to the present. Critical assessment will be made of fictional and historical data. Offered on demand.

BS/HI302 BLACKS IN BIBLICAL HISTORY – 3 credit hours
A study of significant Ancient Black Nations and leaders related to the biblical account. Offered on demand.

BS/HI305 AFRICAN-AMERICAN BAPTIST HISTORY – 3 credit hours
A study of the history of African-Americans in various denominations. The focus will include the origins, major characters, significant events, and contributions of selected denominations. Offered on demand.
 
BS/PS401 AFRICAN-AMERICAN PREACHING – 3 credit hours
Practical study of the art of preaching in a black church context. The course will focus on as analysis of the history, style, and meaning of traditional preaching in the black church. Offered on demand.

BS/HI412 DENOMINATIONALISM AND THE BLACK CHURCH – 3 credit hours
A study of the black experience in selected Baptist denominations. The focus will include exposure to the history of denominations with a Black Baptist constituency. Offered on demand.

BC/CE401 SUNDAY SCHOOL GROWTH IN THE BLACK CHURCH – 3 credit hours
An examination of the history, organization and principles of growth of contemporary, outstanding Sunday schools in African-American Churches. Offered on demand.

BS/TH/PH405 CONTEMPORARY BLACK AND LIBERATION THEOLOGY – 3 credit hours
An in depth study of major Black Christian thinkers in America, i.e., particularly the thoughts of James Cone and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

BS/SO313 MARRIAGE AND THE BLACK FAMILY – 3 credit hours
A comparative study of the literature on the Black family as it has been done by both Black and non-Black scholars. Critical theological assessment will be made of the Black Family as it is understood in a historically multi-ethnic society.

DIVISION OF GENERAL STUDIES

The division of general studies is comprised of seven disciplines: English, Modern Languages, Psychology, Sociology, Philosophy, History, and General Mathematics.

Students completing the General Studies component of the curriculum will be instructed in postsecondary-level skills in written and oral communication and the knowledge and skills necessary to understand significant works of literature in a specific time period, cultural context, or literary genre. They will be provided an opportunity to gain a fuller awareness of the relationship between past and present in the recurring themes of human events and the interaction between culture and Christianity, and to be introduced to the major schools of philosophical thought and logic and the basic concepts and methods of scientific research, evaluation, and problem solving.

A survey of early modern history from A. D. 1650 to the present. An examination of the various structures and methods of preparation of biblical, expositional messages.
